Kick Off Principles of Community Celebration Feb. 10

Get ready to celebrate our community’s vibrant diversity and unity! Registration is now open for this year’s Principles of Community Celebration, taking place on Monday, Feb. 10, 2025, from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. This annual event is an incredible opportunity to honor the values of inclusion, equity, and respect that make our community strong.

�鶹��ý Honors 35 Years of the Principles of Community

Thirty-five years ago, a community of �鶹��ý students came together to define a shared set of values related to a sense of belonging and respect that would shape the university’s future. What started as a grassroots movement in Student Housing has since grown into a core part of �鶹��ý’ identity, culture and everyday interactions.

To mark this milestone, �鶹��ý is launching a 10-month-long commemoration starting this February under the theme “Principles of Community, by Community, for Community.”

�鶹��ý Campus Leadership Reaffirms the Principles of Community

Chancellor Gary S. May and other �鶹��ý leaders have issued a video message in which they discussed the importance of fostering a campus community founded on connection, mutual respect and kindness, even as external events create challenges. They reaffirmed �鶹��ý’ Principles of Community, which underlie a learning and research environment in which people can be their authentic selves and contribute to the university and beyond.

�鶹��ý is celebrating its Principles of Community this week — the ideals that “keep us grounded in a spirit of mutual respect,” as Chancellor Gary S. May said during the opening ceremony Monday (Feb. 22).

“It means we find strength in our diversity and recognize the value we all bring to �鶹��ý, no matter what our background or point of view may be,” May said of the document, first signed in 1990.

Reaffirming the Meaning Behind the Principles of Community

Principles of Community Week is approaching, and after the events of 2020 the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is asking the campus community to describe the document in a campaign that will become a reaffirmation of our values — the way Aggies treat one another and want to be treated — in future years.

“When you — our students, our educators, our researchers, our staff — think about what the Principles of Community ought to be, what words come to mind?” the office said in an email to students today (Feb. 9).
