Guildford Web Services advocate the use of Free and Open Source Software, that is software that respects the freedom of the user (not free as in beer). This is why we use WordPress, it is free from the usual licensing restrictions, as it is covered by the GPL (General Public License), this means we can redistribute it without incurring fees to ourselves and to our customers.
Free Open Source Software grants you these freedoms:
The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose
The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish
The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbour
The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others. By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
We at Guildford Web Services Ltd take this a stage further, ANY website we deploy on our servers that we have helped create belongs to the customer, and not us. This means you have the freedom to move the website, get another developer in to create you a new theme, or simply click on the self destruct button!
After all, it is YOUR website that is part of YOUR business, you should not beholden to any developer or web hosting business, which we have seen many times. The copyright of the design is yours the moment the design invoice is paid.
If you want to move away from us, all we ask is: what did we do wrong, and how we can change it so it doesn’t happen again – we will NEVER hold your website as ransom.
