SSL certificates, you have heard of them, but what are they, and do you need them?
SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer and needs a certificate by a trusted authority, before, this meant having to pay a third party to have one for your site. These certificates allow you to use HTTPS rather than HTTP. With HTTPS the connection is secure, which is needed if you are selling products online, or even at it’s ‘basic’ website registration for users.
Search engines like Google are now preferring secure websites over insecure ones, so nowadays it’s a must for any website to be secure.
In the early days, you needed to buy one from a trusted authority, nowadays you can get these free via Let’s Encrypt.
With Guildford Web Services, you can add one of these to your domain by one click within your hosting panel. This is standard even on our cheapest plan.
